Dubai is just one of 7 Emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates
(UAE). The others are quieter and less developed, but they still have
fantastic beaches and resorts offering great value for money, as hotel
rates are cheaper outside Dubai. For those in the know, the 'Beyond Dubai'
option is an increasingly popular choice, offering a great beach holiday
but without the hustle and bustle of fast-moving Dubai.
Of the 7 Emirates, Ras al Khaimah is

the
most scenic and varied. Within its territory it combines sandy beaches,
lush plains, mysterious desert and the rolling Al Jeer mountains. To lie
back on the lovely beach or by the pool might be your only ambition, but
there are plenty of distractions.
Once a fort, the Museum of Ras al Khaimah has fascinating archaeological
material excavated in the area over the last 20 years. Some of it dates
back as early as 5,000BC! You can also visit the khat (hot springs), play
golf on a floodlit course (handy in the hottest months), go water-skiing,
or enjoy a game of tenpin bowling.
Lying in the east of the UAE, Fujairah is the only Emirate on the Gulf
of Oman, rather than the Arabian Gulf. With lovely clean beaches, backed
by mountains, it's a haven for water sports, especially snorkelling and
diving. Deep-sea fishing is popular, too. Cultural attractions include
ancient petroglyphs that date back to the Neolithic period.
