The relaxed town of Cairns is your gateway to the tropical north of Queensland.  If your idea of paradise is endless white sandy beaches, fringed with exotic palms and lapped by crystal clear water, then Tropical North Queensland is the place for you. Basking in year-round tropical sunshine, it's a place to relax and recharge the batteries. But not for long - there are plenty of things to do and see in the region.

A must for all visitors is a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. There are many day trips and cruises available which give you the opportunity to snorkel amongst the coral and brightly coloured tropical fish. The diving along the Reef is world renowned and both experts and beginners are well catered for. You can even explore this natural wonderland without getting your feet wet, aboard a glass bottomed boat or semi-submersible.

On land, magnificent ancient rainforest covers the hills. You can journey above its towering canopy to the village of Kuranda on the amazing Skyrail cableway, returning on the historic Scenic Railway, with spectacular views of the Barron Gorge and Falls. The nearby Tjapukai Park gives a fascinating insight into Aboriginal culture and art.

The Atherton Tablelands, just an hour from Cairns and 900m above sea level, are cooler and greener, with impressive waterfalls, volcanic lakes and charming country towns to explore. There are great bush walks and even hot air balloon rides.
